Make your own Hand-formed Tableware with Kate McIntyre

Tutor: Kate McIntyre

This five week course is a introduction to the exciting possibilities of hand-building and working with clay. You will be guided though the design process to make your own unique set of tableware. You will explore techniques such as slab building, coiling, pinching and working with moulds.  As you learn the different techniques, you will make a range of functional pieces for the table including mugs, bowls and plates.

We will start with hand-building basics, using slab building to create a cup or bowl. We will then move through to building with coils or using pinch techniques. In the moulding section, you will learn how to form plates and bowls. Learning to use all these techniques will help build your familiarity and skills in working with clay as a material, and give you the expertise you need to create beautiful ceramics of your own.

Each week there will be a demonstration with a focus on building your skills, from how to join handles, through to adding surface decoration and glazing. As we move through the course, you will be encouraged to explore and experiment with these techniques, which will help you develop your own designs. This course is suited to beginners, and can be tailored to suit those who have some experience working with clay.
