Portraiture 101 with Toby Twiss

Learn how to model and mould a life-sized head in clay. Explore the skills needed to render a likeness of a person in clay. A wonderful introduction to the ceramic portrait.
Price of the course includes a live model for some of the sessions. All other materials, clay and firings will need to be purchased, and firings are paid separately.

This 5 week course is an introduction to the exciting possibilities of hand-building and working with clay. In this class we focus on making functional objects that bring joy to your home, such as vases and planters.
You will explore techniques such as slab building, coiling and surface decoration. Learning to use all these techniques will help build your familiarity and skills in working with clay as a material, and give you the expertise you need to create beautiful ceramics of your own.
Each week there will be a demonstration with a focus on building your skills. As we move through the course, you will be encouraged to explore and experiment with these techniques, which will help you develop your own designs. This course is suited to beginners, and can be tailored to suit those who have some experience working with clay.

Hand Building with Richard
Friday Mornings: 10am - 1pm

In this 4 week course with Richard you will get to experience a variety of hand building techniques. This is a perfect opportunity to get a feel for working with clay. Richard Naylor will start with the basics of working with clay - the pinch pot, and progress with coiling techniques and hand building skills, and you will end up with some beautifully finished pieces.

Sculpture with Helen Perrett
Thursday Mornings: 10am - 1pm

In this class you will have demonstrations by the tutor and learn the basic techniques of hand building sculptural pieces. Planning and research will be discussed and surface treatments such as applying texture and colour will be explored. You can do a class project with the tutor demonstrating or work on an individual project with support and encouragement.

Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture with Becky Richards
Monday Evenings: 6:30 - 9pm

This 6 week course is designed to support each student as they grow and strengthen their individual making practice. We will use a range of hand-building methods (pinching, soft-slab building, coiling) and we will explore diverse surface finishes using glaze and underglaze, pigments and oxides. Together we will cover:
- Simple methods of using visual research and drawing to fuel your ceramic practice
- Skills in editing and developing a body of ceramic work
- Experimenting with form, scale, texture, repetition and contrast to enliven your work, take your ideas further and build a ‘ceramic vocabulary’
- Innovative methods of displaying ceramic sculpture, and how these may inform your making process
This course welcomes all levels, but will be especially rewarding for those with a little bit of previous experience in basic hand-building methods, or individuals with existing sculptural practices in any medium.

By week 3 you will choose 4 favourite items to be bisc fired, and in week 4 you will learn how to apply glaze to finish your pieces, ready for their final glaze firing.
Clay and tools included as well as 4 pieces to be fired and glazed. Extra pieces may be kept for an additional charge.

This is a unique opportunity to experience throwing on the wheel under the guidance of our tutors. At the end of the course they will be able to decorate their work and we will fire and glaze it, making it completely food and dishwasher safe - the perfect opportunity to work with their hands and be rewarded by taking home their own handcrafted pots. Course includes 4 pieces to keep - additional pieces may be kept for a fee of $10 per piece.

Our Young Potters Club is perfect for our younger students who have already taken some classes with us. Be it hand building or wheel throwing, we encourage these young makers to continue building their skills under the guidance of our two tutors, Strahan and Sofia. Our tutors will support and help students in their individual projects, and be available for advice in all aspects of making. This is a great step towards independent practise, and a place for like-minded makers to get together.
Clay and tools are provided, plus 4 items for firing. Any additional items will cost an extra $10 per item.
