In this class you will have demonstrations by the tutor and learn the basic techniques of hand building sculptural pieces. Planning and research will be discussed and surface treatments such as applying texture and colour will be explored. You can do a class project with the tutor demonstrating or work on an individual project with support and encouragement.

Suitable for beginner to experienced makers, this class focuses on using hand-building techniques to begin developing your own unique approach to ceramic sculpture. You will gain foundation skills in forming, joining, and creating texture, while exploring the imaginative potential of abstract ceramic forms. Taking organic shapes from the natural world as a starting point, you will be supported in a process of experimentation, gaining confidence as your ideas and outcomes grow.

Hand Building with Richard

In this 5 week course with Richard you will get to experience a variety of hand building techniques. This is a perfect opportunity to get a feel for working with clay. Richard Naylor will start with the basics of working with clay - the pinch pot, and progress with coiling techniques and hand building skills, and you will end up with some beautifully finished pieces.

This 5 week course is an introduction to the exciting possibilities of hand-building and working with clay. In this class we focus on making functional objects that bring joy to your home, such as vases and planters, which help bring nature inside your home to enjoy this winter.

You will explore techniques such as slab building, coiling and surface decoration. Learning to use all these techniques will help build your familiarity and skills in working with clay as a material, and give you the expertise you need to create beautiful ceramics of your own.

Each week there will be a demonstration with a focus on building your skills. As we move through the course, you will be encouraged to explore and experiment with these techniques, which will help you develop your own designs. This course is suited to beginners, and can be tailored to suit those who have some experience working with clay.

In this 8 week class students will be encouraged to research, develop and communicate ideas while mastering basic clay processes. Annie will teach you to be conversant with coil and slab techniques, which will enable you to explore the figurative form in a modular way. Annie empowers students to develop personal areas of interest using the figurative form.

Miniature pictures on clay with Kate McLean

Kate McLean will teach you a variety of techniques to bring your miniature works to life. In this class you will learn to use textures, impressions, monoprinting and transfers to create your own small pieces – be they brooches, pendants, tiles, or surfaces of work you have on the go.

You will learn to create your own stash of personal images that you can use anytime, as well as learning additional techniques such as sgraffito and carved plaster to make textured brooches, buttons and other small works.

Hand build your own planter pots and learn about growing herbs and micro-greens in this 4 week course. Jo Raill is a well-known ceramicist and a talented and skilled grower with a wealth of knowledge about plants and permaculture.
